Learn how to decorate glassware with washi tape! You can get all of your supplies from Dollar Tree. This project is so easy, no skills are required.

Dollar store craft - decorate glassware with washi tape

Have you ever browsed the glass section at the dollar store? There’s some great stuff, and of course it’s all cheap. But by that I mean inexpensive – not poor quality.

It’s the kind that if you threw at the wall could do some damage, which is good (my quality rating for glass).

I recently visited my local Dollar Tree and found this candle holder that can also be used as a coaster . . . and I knew it had to be decorated with washi tape. Here’s my tutorial to decorate glassware, and you won’t believe how easy it is.

Decorate Dollar Store Glass

Gather These Supplies

  • Dollar store coaster or candle holder (any glass item will do)
  • Washi tape in various patterns
  • Mod Podge Satin
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • FolkArt Enamel acrylic paint – Wicker White
  • Craft knife
  • Paintbrush

I started with one washi tape across the middle of the glass and then went from there. To start I just tore the washi tape to fit.

Keep striping the washi tape. And if you are curious how to trim the tape, just do it with a craft knife. Push the washi tape into the recess of the glass with your finger, and then trim with the craft knife. It cuts very easily.

Once your washi tape is smoothed down and trimmed, add Mod Podge to the top and let dry. This seals the washi tape. You are also going to put Dimensional Magic on top and this helps keep certain colors from bleeding.

Add Dimensional Magic to the top and let dry. If the recess is really deep, add a layer and let dry, then add another layer and let dry. After the Dimensional Magic was completely dry, I realized that the washi tape was kind of transparent.

So I painted . . .

I used white glass paint on the bottom of my dish. You don’t have to do this – it just depends on the colors of your washi tape and how transparent it is. Let the paint dry.

Here’s the finished dish – which makes great home decor, but also a gift. And don’t you love the woodgrain tape? And the arrow tape? It’s so fun.

Now that you know how to decorate glassware, would you try it? Let me know in the comments!
